During our visit to their office, we got an insight into how they ensure a stylish and welcoming office environment where the nature of the business means you no longer have fixed seats. When moving to emagine's current headquarters, it was decided that there would be no fixed desk space for all employees. This design harmonizes perfectly with the company's dynamic work routine, where employees often work at customer sites or from home, but also places high demands on the office layout and service contracts, such as cleaning.
Instead of permanent seats, they have implemented "flyer seats". This concept means fewer fixed workstations and no guarantee of sitting at the same desk every day. To make this setup super easy, emagine has introduced a locker system. This means that each employee has their own box for storing personal belongings, such as PCs and other small items, which can be locked in their locker. Every morning, employees can take their box and place it wherever they want to sit and work. There is also a responsibility on each employee to ensure that the space is left in a welcoming condition for the next one.
Officeguru's experience is that a flyer seat setup is not equally popular among employees in all companies - with comments such as "you don't feel welcome when you don't have a real seat". But the flyer seat concept works at emagine. This may be due to the fact that consultants are used to being guests of their clients and therefore always clean up after themselves, but also because emagine's office is deliberately designed to be a hub for both social and professional activities. There are plenty of inviting meeting facilities and shared workspaces that are ideal for workshops, brainstorms and project spaces. In addition, it's a high priority that employees want to participate in social events, which is why emagine has invested in a huge inviting outdoor environment, including a roof terrace with a bar for the Friday bar in the summer.
