Employee gifts put a smile on most employees' faces - it's a great way to show your employees that you appreciate them. Employee gifts come in many shapes, sizes and variations. Most employee gifts are occasional gifts, and then there are also companies that offer gifts to employees who have made a special effort. Read on as we go through the different types of gifts for employees and also look at the taxation of employee gifts to make sure you're not left with your hair in the mailbox when you provide gifts for your employees.

Employee gifts spread joy and motivation

Maybe you've already read our blog post on employee gifts? If not, you can check it outhere. Here we describe many types of employee benefits and also briefly discuss employee gifts. What's essential, both for perks in general and for employee gifts, is that they bring joy to your employees andmotivation to the workplace, because it shows them that you value their work and efforts for the company.

It's important as a manager to show that you value your employees. This can be done in many ways; you can make an effort to accommodate your employees and createjob satisfaction by listening to them and making them feel seen and heard. Or you can organizecompany events or even occasionally give gifts to your employees to make them feel appreciated.

Gifts for employees - when can/should you give employee gifts?

As mentioned earlier, there are many types of employee gifts. However, what most employee gifts have in common is that they are occasion-specific. For example, gifts for employees could be in the form of:

  • Welcome gifts for new employees (e.g. flowers or chocolates)

  • An annual Christmas gift

  • Anniversary gifts for employees who have been with the company for e.g. 5, 10, 15, 25 or 40 years.

  • Wedding gift if an employee has gotten married

  • Birth or maternity gift if an employee has become a parent

  • Birthday gift on round birthdays

Other types of gifts for employees could, for example, be in the form of a gift if an employee has made a special contribution. However, most companies make use of a bonus in the form of a financial contribution, but some companies give their employees a staff gift instead.

And what about tax on employee gifts?

Gift tax is a bit of a jungle for most people. There are a number of rules for tax and employee gifts that are worth both you as a manager and your employees being aware of. If the totalannual value of gifts to an employee exceeds DKK 1,200, the entire amount must be taxed. However, there is a difference between the taxation of "regular" employee gifts and Christmas gifts:

Staff gifts

No tax is payable on gifts to employees witha total annual value of DKK 1,200. However, if the amount is exceeded, tax must be paid on the entire amount. So, for example, you can give two employee gifts of DKK 500 each in the course of a year without being taxed.

Christmas gifts

There are some special rules for Christmas gifts. Christmas gifts count towards the annual amount of employee gifts. However, if the Christmas gift costsDKK 900 or less, it does not count towards the DKK 1,200. If the Christmas gift costsmore than DKK 900 and the total annual amount of gifts to the employee exceeds DKK 1,200,the entire amount must be taxed.
