With high job satisfaction in the office comes engagement, productivity and motivation - three keywords for an effective employee or colleague. But how do you create job satisfaction and what do you do if colleagues or employees experience a lack of job satisfaction? Read on as Officeguru tries to give you the answers.

Wellbeing and job satisfaction

Wellbeing and job satisfaction go hand in hand. If job satisfaction is high, the well-being of colleagues or employees will most likely be high too. Wellbeing and job satisfaction are important in the workplace as they help ensure that employees feel good, work more productively, are more engaged in their work and, not least, retain them in the workplace. There are many ways to ensure high wellbeing and job satisfaction, and it's important that both managers and colleagues make it a priority to maintain a good, pleasant and appreciative work environment in the office. If employees in a workplace don't feel good, it can affect both performance and overall happiness, which can be both humanly and financially damaging.

Reasons for a lack of job satisfaction - what should you be aware of?

There can be several reasons for a loss of job satisfaction. It can be due to disagreements between employees/colleagues, in relation to a manager/supervisor and increased work pressure. It's important to take a lack of job satisfaction in the office seriously so that you can create a nice, safe and healthy work environment where employees thrive.

The typical causes of low job satisfaction are:

  • Lack of praise and recognition: It 's important that you as a manager or colleague recognize and praise your employees or colleagues for the work they have done.

  • Complaints from colleagues: When colleagues complain in an inappropriate way, it creates negative behavior in the workplace. That's why it's important for both managers and coworkers to speak up against complaints that aren't constructive.

  • Busyness and stress: If the office is busy and you don't feel like you have any breathing space, it can cause stress. Short periods of pressure in the workplace are hard to avoid, so it's essential that managers remember to focus on the positive results of their employees' hard work.

  • Lack of support from the manager: If you as an employee feel that your boss doesn't support you and therefore feel or sense that they don't trust you, it can lead to an upset stomach and poor well-being. As a manager, it's important that you listen to your employees, make time for them and support them.

  • Poor relationship with the manager:If employees experience a poor relationship with their manager, it can cause anxiety and dissatisfaction and thus reduce job satisfaction. As a manager, it's important that you show your employees that you are there, spend time with them and engage with them.

  • Unclear and unstructured routines: If employees don't know what their tasks are or are unsure of the company's vision and direction, it can take away their job satisfaction. That's why it's important for managers to make sure they communicate clearly and in a proper tone.

Have you, your colleague or your employees lost your job satisfaction?

If you, your colleague or your employees have lost job satisfaction, it's crucial that it is rectified as soon as possible. If it's you, you should talk to your manager so you can work together to address the problem. If you feel that your colleague has lost job satisfaction, it's a good idea to support your colleague and remember to recognize the job they are doing - but remember that it is ultimately the manager's responsibility to create job satisfaction. If you're a manager, you should be aware of the above reasons for lack of job satisfaction. You should be clear in your communication with your employees, make time for them, remember to recognize and praise them and listen to them. As a manager, it's your number one job to ensure a high level of job satisfaction in the workplace - this will both ensure that your employees are happy to go to work and are therefore productive, and at the same time it will show on the bottom line; this is due to increased productivity, but also lower sick leave and staff turnover.

What creates job satisfaction?

In addition to being aware of the typical causes of lack of job satisfaction, there are a number of other points you can focus on if you as a manager/leader want to create motivation and job satisfaction in the workplace.

Give your employees feedback

It's important to give your employees constructive feedback - both in the form of praise and criticism. If you forget to give them feedback, you risk your employees doubting whether they are doing their job properly and potentially becoming unsure of themselves. By remembering to give your employees constructive feedback, they will know what they're doing well and how they can improve - and this provides both motivation and job satisfaction.

Remember to support your employees

It's important for employees to feel welcomed and understood - even if they make mistakes. That's why it's important that you, as a manager, empathize with their challenges or issues. For example, if an employee feels that a customer or other external party is criticizing them, you should support the employee and show loyalty. That way, the employee will feel appreciated, welcomed and trusted.

Celebrate the successes!

Create motivation and job satisfaction by celebrating and honoring the successful projects in the workplace. Success can be measured on many different parameters; it can be a successful cross-departmental collaboration, it can be great experiences with happy and grateful customers, it can be in the form of learning and new knowledge that will contribute to the company and future work - and much more.

Focus on the positive

Positivity and a generally positive workplace creates motivation and job satisfaction. For example, you can focus on good results, great customer cases, etc. This will increase engagement and make employees feel appreciated and valued - all elements that create job satisfaction.

Give your employees freedom with responsibility

With trust comes responsibility, but with trust also comes freedom. It creates motivation and job satisfaction when employees feel trusted by their manager and are given responsibility, but also when that responsibility comes with a good amount of freedom. For example, do your employees have the option to work from home a few days a week if they want to? Or have you implemented a 30-hour work week? There are several ways to create freedom for your employees and increase their job satisfaction.

Involve your employees and focus on communication

Involving your employees, giving them responsibility and communicating clearly creates job satisfaction and engagement. Involving and sparring with your employees encourages creativity in your workforce. When your employees feel involved, listened to and properly informed, they feel important to the company and are more likely to feel that what they do is meaningful to them - and that leads to job satisfaction!

What makes your colleagues and yourself happy at work?

While it's ultimately the manager's responsibility to create motivation and job satisfaction, there's also a lot you can do - both for yourself and for your colleagues.

Smile - and the world smiles back

When you smile, it's contagious and brings laughter, joy and good energy to the workplace. Take the time to say "good morning" to your colleagues and ask them how their vacation or weekend went. When you're welcoming and smiling, it's contagious and will boost the overall happiness of the office.

Take time off during lunch breaks

When you have a lunch break, take time off and avoid using it for extra work. Lunch breaks are an important factor during the working day as they provide a much-needed break and respite from work, as well as an opportunity to socialize with colleagues.

Remember to keep moving

It's healthy to get out and about during the working day. Sitting down for too long lowers your energy levels and therefore your ability to concentrate. Stretch your legs, go for a short walk with a colleague to turn a task around, take the stairs instead of the elevator, etc. Maybe you have a height-adjustable desk and can do some work standing up?

Remember to praise and thank each other

It's always nice to receive praise, but often we only or primarily expect it from the manager. Remember to praise and thank your colleagues - maybe they've done a really good job, helped you with a difficult task or maybe you've had a good collaboration process. Praise and appreciation of each other creates job satisfaction and positivity.

Feel free to say no!

You may be familiar with the feeling of taking on too many tasks because you want to please everyone and show that you care about your work and your workplace. But it's okay to say no when you have too much on your plate. If you have too many tasks, it can become overwhelming and you can get busy and feel stressed. You can help yourself maintain your job satisfaction if you remember to say no when you don't actually have time. Stand up for yourself - it's an important lesson and it builds integrity and ultimately increases your self-awareness and self-esteem.

However, it's important to emphasize that everyone is different and therefore has different needs. For some, one thing creates job satisfaction, while for others it is more 'indifferent'. That's why communication is again an essential aspect of creating job satisfaction, because it's by communicating with each other that we understand each other and can increase positivity, job satisfaction and collegiality.
